1. NMP Evaluation

My initial ideas for the NMP consisted of creating a title sequence as that was my theme for my dissertation and I have an interest in film so combining film/tv and motion was the ideal brief for me. So I set my own personal brief of creating a title sequence for an upcoming tv series, this along with the D&AD Monotype brief and the Magna Carta 2015 live brief made up my NMP.

The first project was the personal set brief of creating a title sequence for an upcoming tv series, I researched around into the different genres and aimed to find a sequence that hadn’t been regenerated so I could bring fresh ideas to the table. The chosen tv show was Westworld, a HBO drama series loosely based on a 1970’s film by the same name, the film centres around a futuristic theme park that is habited by androids that carry out the needs of its guests. The combination of sci fi and western made it a tricky brief and at first I struggled to generate ideas towards the sequence. I began to experiment with my initial ideas surrounding a malfunction, experimenting with glitches but there wasn’t a strong narrative behind the sequence.

Once I had my main idea which was taking part of the plot from the film as the tv series narrative had been kept quiet, the main plot part was the malfunction in the androids which leads to the androids massacring the theme parks guests. Taking the idea of a malfunction I explored areas of causations and struck on the idea of an infection, the infection would be organic in nature capturing a link between human and androids surrounding the audience in mystery. The aim of a title sequence is display a narrative in a visually interesting way, the narrative path was to show an organic substance taking over the androids circuitry - infecting them.

Having been researching I came across filming using a macro lens and found some inspiring videos of a substance being dropped into bubbles, the substance is called ferrofluid a magnetic liquid which turns to solid under magnetism. The effect it gave was visually interesting and given that it is a metallic substance it slotted in well with the android link.

I experimented with ferrofluid dropping it into various materials such as water and ink, experimenting with the use of the magnet. I enjoyed the experimentation and achieved some good footage that could be used for the title sequence, I also took various photographs using the macro lens of circuitry and organic materials. Having collected the material the next step was to compose the motion piece.

The sequence takes the macro footage I filmed of the ferrofluid which gives a close up of the ‘infection’ and then transitions into the macro photography of the circuits with more ferrofluid footage layered on top to represent the spread of infection. The idea for the title sequence is to transition between the close up ‘infection’ and then to the spreading of the infection which increases as the sequence progresses. The close up infection footage will be combined with glitches which again increase as the sequence develops to show the increase in disfunction due to this infection. I also produced some motion posters carrying on in the same style as the title sequence to spread the word of the series to the viewers.

Overall I’m pleased with the resulting title sequence, though I spent too long on the experimentation stage as the development including editing and composing took more time than I imagined. I feel though should I undertake a similar project again I’m now more aware of the time and scheduling.
The second project I worked on was the D&AD Monotype brief, I explored a few possibilities of directors but chose Wes Anderson as I felt his films were visually aesthetically pleasing and his overall directing style is well known.

The concept for the brief was to represent Wes Andersons visual style as whole, mise en scene is a key part of film and includes the whole visual styling from camera shots, typography, colour, props etc. Wes Andersons films are well stylised and he is very meticulous in his nature of design and direction.

My solution was to create a three motion posters, one for each film: Bottle Rocket, The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr.Fox with as these three films use the font Futura. The posters each contain one quote, the film title and a prop from the film which collectively form The Wes Anderson Collective a retrospective screening of his work. When designing the posters I also took into account the colour palette of each and the directing style of Wes Anderson by featuring the type centrally.

Having overran on the Westworld brief the outcomes for the this brief weren’t as slick as I would have liked but I feel that the idea behind those visuals is strong.

The third brief is a live brief for the Magna Carta 2015, an event celebrating 800 years of the Magna Carta in which we have to create a Son et lumiere. This has allowed me to gain experience in the real world of design, meeting with clients, discussion of ideas and will give me experience in projection mapping which I have never carried out before.

Overall the NMP has been enjoyable its allowed me to expand on areas that I enjoy and improve my skill set.

    Fantastic Mr fox test 3

This time the quote falls in from the start, then the apples fall to reveal. Adding extra bits of animation to complete the overall flow of the motion poster which will run in a cycle.

  5. Fantastic Mr Fox Poster Final

This poster starts with the quote letters falling in then apples fall in from the top covering the quote before disappearing to reveal the title.

The apple falling animation was a little tricky but the idea is there and get the message across, linking to the plot of the film.

  7. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Final Poster

Following in the same style as the previous, the poster starts with the quote floating in from the bottom and then a shoal of fish cover the quote and swim away revealing the film title.

This works really well incorporating the features from the film, straight to the point for the viewer.

  9. Bottle Rocket Final

Final poster for The Wes Anderson Collective, the film being Bottle Rocket features all features of the visual style of the film, from the pastel colours to a prop from the film in the rocket which also links to the title with the focal point being a quote from the film.

The poster starts with the quote, then rockets fly in from the left cover the quote and then flying off to the right to reveal the film title. Then the information about the screening appears.

The idea and styling comes across as I envisioned but the animation of the rockets in particular aren’t as smooth as I’d have liked. Still I think it gives off a lo fi visual which is fairly quirky reflecting on Wes Anderson’s personality.

    Fantastic Mr Fox test 2

The falling apples have been a little tricky to animate so I’ve used them dropping in via a motion path and added some expressions to make it look more realistic with gravity, dropping movements. Here the quote appears with the apples falling from the top to cover and then reveal the title.

Poster test for Fantastic Mr Fox, here the prop will be the apples linking to one of the plots of the film revolving around apple cider production. The idea here is to have the apples fall and cover the quote, this is something thats been a little tricky.

Here I’ve tried the using the particle system but couldn’t get the effect I wanted to achieve.
